Books, eBooks, Plays, Scripts

Under the Statutory Education Licence teaching staff can copy (in both hard copy and electronically) and communicate reasonable portions of any literary, dramatic, artistic or musical work for educational purposes if it is over 10 pages in length.

A reasonable portion is 10% of the number of pages or 1 chapter (whichever is the greater) from the published edition.

Book
  • 10% of the Pages or;
  • 1 chapter.
 
eBook
  • 10% of the Pages or;
  • 1 chapter or;
  • 10% of the words if the content is unstable.

eBooks can have other licencing issues which could override this rule.

If you are unsure check with Library staff.

Script
  • 10% of the Pages or;
  • 10% of the words (if online).
 
Sheet Music
  • 10% of the Pages.
  • 10% of the number of bars (if online).
 
Plays
  • 10% of the Pages or;
  • 10% of the words (if online).
 
Journals
  • 1 article per issue.
  • Multiple articles from the same issue if they are on the same topic.
Journals can have other licencing issues which could override this rule. 

Anthologies

(An anthology is a collection of individual works that make up a compilation)

  • If the work is less than 15 pages
    • The WHOLE work
  • If the work exceeds 15 pages:
    • 10% of the Pages or;
    • 1 chapter.
    • The WHOLE if it has NOT been published separately.
  • Multiple works from the same anthology, use the same rules as above.
 

Published Works

(A Public Domain work e.g. Dickens)

  • Whole work

Be cautious with different, translations, introductions, commentaries, edits, etc. 

If unsure check with Library Staff. 

Out of Print/Unavailable Texts
  • Whole work, but check with the Library first.
