At the outset of World War I a group of German schoolboys, fired by patriotism, enlist for the Fatherland but are ill-prepared for the realities of trench warfare. Milestone sought to convey Remarque's pacifist message through a mixture of stylisation and naturalism. The poetic dialogue combines humour and sentimentality. The much-praised sense of reality in the recreation of trench warfare was achieved through unusually precise pre-planning and the harnessing of camera movement to swift cutting.

Follows the story of Prof. Immanuel Rath, his involvement with and subsequent marriage to the entertainer Lola Lola, and his final degradation.
