Sidney Falco is an unscrupulous Press agent who does a famous columnist's dirty work to further his ambition. The powerful columnist, J.J. Hunsecker, has an obsessive and overbearing relationship with his younger, nervous sister, Susan, and employs Falco to destroy the love she has for a guitar player by whatever means. Susan becomes confused and near-suicidal but is prevented from jumping off her balcony by Falco. J.J. returns home, and believing Falco has manhandled his sister turns on him. In the fracas J.J.'s part in trying to break up his sister's relationship with her fiance is revealed. Susan finally finds the strength to break free of her brother's influence.
