As the world proceeds, with caution, into the New Year there is a sense that as a society the past years’ challenges made us stronger and in a strange way our forced separation only proved to unite us. Closer to home, we believe the same can be said for the Jerzy Toeplitz Library family. We were thrown some curve balls last year and had to work hard to keep our resources up to their high standard, while navigating the choppy seas of an online library environment. It certainly had its challenges but at the end of the year we feel like we conquered (most) of them and here we are, back again, united, happy to be here and poised to captain AFTRS’ learning and entertainment hub.
After a tiny false start this January we can now confirm that the library has opened its physical doors to staff and students. While we will not be returning to a full workroom of staff just yet, the library will be fully functioning with two librarians on the premises each day. While there are still some limitations to our physical offerings, our books and audio-visual material, displays and new titles will all be up and running and available to use and take out. Borrowing and browsing joy!
This year we are establishing new study and research workshops to help you get the most out of the library and the learning environment at AFTRS. The workshops will cover eight core study and assignment skills in an easy-to-understand presentation that will not drown participants in information overload. The workshops are part of greater partnership with student centre focusing on a holistic learning approach that will incorporate creative afternoons and wellness sessions.
As last year demonstrated, connection is certainly key to our wellbeing and plays a vital role in our learning community too, so to that end, as well as workshops, we are once more tailoring our annual program of entertainment and events to come together in a relaxed and fun environment. Look forward to the Oscars Party, where you will be invited to get glammed up and watch the awards with us and Trivia nights, a chance to show off your film knowledge and have a laugh.
Lastly, 2021 will see the unveiling of a very special library collection. Legendary film historian Bill Collins, who passed away in 2019, held a rich and overflowing personal film library which has now been generously donated by his family for the industry to experience. Keep an eye out for the grand opening of the Bill Collins Collection and be sure to calve out time to wander the shelves, pull up an ottoman and get lost in the glorious film memorabilia this collection offers.
From all of us in the library we again invite you to jump on board and experience the displays, events, and resources on offer this year. Here we go!
