Acronyms

D&D uses a lot of Acronyms! Don't let these scare you! You will be rolling a Nat D20, stabbing that NPC, and Wowing your DM in no time!

  • 5e. This stands for the 5th Edition of the game. It is the most recent. 
  • Character Class.  What does your character do? Are they a Ranger, Rogue, Wizard, Warlock? There are so many opportunities. This determines your character's abilities. 
  • Character Race. What race is your character? human, dwarf, elf, halfling, half-elf, half-orc, Tabaxi? This determines your character's skills.
  • DM. This stands for Dungeon Master. The DM runs the game! They interpret the dice. 
  • NPC.  Non-player character. NPCs are usually created and played by the DM. 
  • Wizards of the Coast (WotC). The game's publisher. 
  • HP. Health Points

This LibGuide is designed to give you the basic tools you will need to start your journey into the World of Dungeons and Dragons.

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game. You create and play a character, together the characters and yourself form a ‘Party’ and enter the world that the Dungeon Master has created for you. You will interact with the setting's inhabitants and each other. Together you will play, solve dilemmas, engage in battles, gather treasure and knowledge.
