Welcome 2022 Students: Network Set-up

Getting Set up on AFTRS Systems- end January 2022

You are required to set up your AFTRS network account

Now that you have your AFTRS Student number you can get set up on the AFTRS systems, enabling you to access various online resources for your course.

AFTRS Student Email

Your AFTRS Email address

As a student you will be issued with two emails that are both in the same mailbox.

Your primary email is your studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au

This email is the one used to log into Office 365 and Eduroam for WiFi access whilst on AFTRS campus.

You will also have an alias email which is your firstname.surname@student.aftrs.edu.au.

This email is used as part of your Network login and is also used to identify you by name when emailing: for anyone emailing you, and for when you are emailing others, internally or externally.

If your first name or last name includes a hyphen, your email address will be assigned with a hyphen.  If your name contains a space, then your email address will be assigned without a space.

Office 365 will display your NAME email as the sender when on OUTLOOK

Preferred First Name 

If you have a preferred FIRST NAME that is different to your legal name, that you would like to be called,  we can also amend your email and Student Management System to reflect.  This is FIRST NAME only. See Legal Name section for more information.

Step One : Network Log in & setting your password

Network Access

Your AFTRS network account will enable you to access various online resources for your course as well as the Wi-Fi and computers in the building.

To set up your network account click on the link for Network Set up

Network setup:              https://form.aftrs.edu.au/NetSetup.html
Username:                     Student number

  1. The first step in the process, you will need to comply with the ICT Acceptable Use Policy.  Tick acceptance of the policy and press SUBMIT.  
  2. Second step will be enter your student number when prompted for your Username.
  3. Once you have completed the form, you will be sent an SMS to the mobile number, as supplied on your application,  to verify your identity.  We recommend that you are in Australia when you do this. If you are overseas, we will be in contact re alternative ways to verify your identity. 
  4. Once you have entered the SMS code you receive, you will required to set a user password which you will use for all systems at AFTRS. This is very important.

AFTRS has an enforced password policy to protect AFTRS accounts. 

The complexity requirements are listed below:  any problems please contact Service Desk  

  • Not contain the user's account name or parts of the user's full name that exceed two consecutive characters
  • Be at least Eight characters in length
  • Contain characters from three of the following four categories:
    • English uppercase characters (A through Z)
    • English lowercase characters (a through z)
    • Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
    • Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)

There are two different ways to log into AFTRS systems

You will create a single password to use across all systems.  

AFTRSstudentnumber@STUDENT.AFTRS.EDU.AU + Password

  • Office 365 
  • Wi-Fi (Eduroam)

  • Computer Labs
  • EFBS (Equipment Booking System)
  • Room Booking system

If you need to reset your password, you can do reset via the password reset 

Password 

Your student ID and password is your access to AFTRS systems while you are enrolled at AFTRS. 

Your password is confidential and should never be shared, doing so breaches the AFTRS Acceptable use policy. 

There are also a number of risks associated with sharing your password with others:

  • Unauthorised and innaproprate use of your AFTRS account (E-mail, Moodle, Storage spaces)
  • Deletion of files or content linked to your account (OneDrive, Storage spaces)
  • If you use the same password across multiple accounts, for instance personal accounts, gaining access to your student account can compromise other accounts using that password. It is recommended that you use different passwords for your accounts. 

To Reset Your Password 

If you have forgotten your password or think your account is compromised you are able to change your password through our password reset server (passwordreset.aftrs.edu.au), without the need to contact IT Support for assistance. 

  • Navigate to: passwordreset.aftrs.edu.au
  • Enter your Student ID (Student Number) 
  • Enter the code sent to your phone
  • Change your password!

Step Two: Office 365 & Course Timetable

Office 365 is available as a free download as part of your student account. 

Once you set up your network account, you will be automatically set up with a Microsoft Office 365 account. 

This includes access to the student email system and to online tools like Word and Excel that you can use during your course of study, as well Team, Sharepoint and One Drive.

It will take approximately 10 minutes for your new password to be synchronised to Office 365.

To login into Office 365, including the student email system:  

Go to: http://office.student.aftrs.edu.au/

You will need to log in with the following details:

Email: StudentNumber@student.aftrs.edu.au    (Note: this is NOT your firstname.lastname student email address)

Password:  Your password as created when setting up NETWORK ACCOUNT

Additional devices 

The AFTRS subscription entitles you to download up to 5 installations of Office 365 Applications on separate devices. (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).  To put on additional devices you can follow our installation guide here. 

512 GB Storage on One Drive 

Microsoft One Drive Students also have access to 512GG online storage provided through Microsoft Office 365. Use of this storage is at your own risk and it is not backed up or accessed by AFTRS. You must manage it within the allocated capacity.

Setting up Email on Office 365 - Outlook

Once you set up your network account above, you will be automatically set up with a Microsoft Office 365 account and email address linked is in the form of firstname.surname@student.aftrs.edu.au.

  • This includes access to the student email system Outlook and to online tools like Word and Excel that you can use during your course of study.
  • All course communications should be conducted through your OUTLOOK email address eg john.smith@student.aftrs.edu.au 
  • It is your responsibility to ensure that you check your email address regularly. You must also ensure that you do not exceed the capacity of this mailbox as you may not receive important messages if the mailbox becomes full.

AFTRS will still use your personal email address as provided during enrolment when required and to send out emails from the Student Management System Paradigm. You must ensure your personal email records are kept up to date.

It will take approximately 10 minutes for your new password to be synchronised to Office 365.

Download Microsoft Outlook on to your phone - highly recommended

Microsoft Outlook app can be downloaded onto a personal mobile device (iOS – Appstore, Android - Play store) for free. 

  1. Download Microsoft Outlook from your device app store.
  2. Open the Outlook app and login with AFTRS email – studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au and your AFTRS password.

Microsoft Teams

AFTRS students and staff use Microsoft Teams as a collaborative, instant messaging and video-conferencing application that is part of our Office 365 Subscription.

It allows you to instantly contact individual people or to create Teams (think groups on Facebook), to collaborate with others and hold meetings. This could be a staff department, project or class of students.

Course Timetable

You will be able to access your course timetable using your Microsoft Office 365 account.

Click on the Calendar icon after logging in at http://office.student.aftrs.edu.au

 

To switch between Mail and Calendar click on the tiled menu icon in the top left

When you click on an event in the Calendar, the details, including location and start/end time, will be displayed in a pop-up box.

Your timetable is made up of two calendars: My Deadlines and Activities and My Timetable

  • My Timetable displays your lectures, tutorials and workshops. 
  • My Deadlines and Activities display Moodle activities such as assignment due dates, Zoom video conferences and online quizzes.

For this information to appear in your online calendar, you will first need to login into Moodle. Please note it may take up to 4 hours for Moodle to sync with your calendar and for the online activities to be displayed.

Accessing your Timetable on a Computer

Your timetable is accessed through your Office 365 account or by clicking on the Timetable link from your Moodle course page. → login.microsoftonline.com

Login with your AFTRS student number - studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au.

Accessing Your Timetable on a Mobile Device

You can also access your calendar by using the Microsoft Outlook app on your mobile device. Timetable apps are available for different Apple, iOS, Android and Windows devices.

Step Three: Log into Moodle

Moodle Learning Management Systems

The Moodle learning management system delivers and supports your learning at AFTRS. It is where you will find all your course information and resources, including assessments, and it is also where you will submit your assessments and receive your grades.

You can log into Moodle from a computer, tablet or smartphone by going to https://moodle.aftrs.edu.au

Your Moodle login details are:

Username  Student number

Password: The password you created when setting up your network account.

Your current courses can be found on the dashboard.

You can filter the view and may need to select “All” or “Future” if your course has not started yet. Courses will be available online for you to view from Orientation Week.

  1. Click on your course to open.
  2. Once inside your course, you can access your course outline, course content, and assessments.
  3. There is a section for each teaching week. Note that in some courses the weekly section will become available the Friday before the teaching week starts.
  4. Scheduled classes that are delivered online use Zoom and the Zoom addresses are shown on Moodle against the class.  For more information about Zoom 

You can get help in the Moodle Guidebook for Students, which can be accessed via the Course Support menu on the top navigation bar, or on your dashboard.  Under the Course Support menu, you can also find Assessment Support and the Production Centre, two useful spaces that will support your learning.

Step Four: Set up Zoom Account

STUDENT ZOOM ACCOUNT

Your Zoom User account is AUTOMATICALLY linked to your AFTRS Microsoft 365 Account.

Therefore your Zoom username will be the same that you use for your AFTRS Microsoft 365 Account: studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au

To install Zoom on a personal computer

  • Visit the Zoom.us Download Centre and hit download under 'Zoom Client for Meetings'
  • Choose ‘Download’ under ‘Zoom Client for Meetings’ to download the Zoom installer. Save the file and run the installer.

Zoom should open automatically once the installation is complete. If not, you can start it from the ‘All Programs’ menu on a PC, or the ‘Applications’ folder on a Mac.

Once you have installed Zoom open the Application

  • Mac | Finder > Applications > Zoom.us
  • Windows | Explorer > Applications > Zoom.us

Once the application has opened you will be created with a Sign-in page.

Click "Change your Password" 

  • This will take you to another browser window where you can set your password up! 
  • Once you have completed this it will ask if you want to invite your friends just choose to "Skip this step" and then you're ready to use Zoom.

Step Five: Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud

Adobe Creative Cloud is provided for use for AFTRS students whilst in the following course:

  • Bachelor of Arts Screen Production
  • Master of Arts Screen
  • Graduate Diploma in Radio FT and PT

Once you have  completed network account log in, you can then log into Adobe Creative Cloud

  1. Navigate to https://creativecloud.adobe.com/apps and sign in.
    • Username:  studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au
    • Password: Your Student Password
  2. Click Download under the "Creative Cloud" option.

 

Login to Creative Cloud

Once the Creative Cloud Desktop Application has been installed, click on the icon which can be found on the top right of your computer for an Apple device and bottom right for Windows.

Enter your AFTRS Credentials: studentnumber@student.aftrs.edu.au and your password.

  • When you click the password field, it should load into the Enterprise ID login window. If not click on Enterprise ID.
  • This screen should be AFTRS branded.
  • Provide your login details here.

Once login is complete, you will then be taken back to the Adobe window and see the Get Started With Creative Cloud screen

Step Six: Paradigm Student Portal

Paradigm Portal 

The Paradigm Student Portal is where you can access to your student records, which holds all your confidential personal and academic information.  You will be able to:

  • Pay your UPFRONT fees online, via credit card
  • View your subject results
  • Print off a Statement of Results at any time
  • Update your semester address, permanent home address and emergency contacts
    • Remember: It is a condition of your enrolment that AFTRS has current and up-to-date information on your address and emergency contact details. AFTRS will use these details to contact you during and after your course ends.

Maintaining Accurate Contact Details 

It is your responsibility to ensure that all your personal and contact details are accurate and kept up to date. This information includes your home address, personal email address, postal address, mobile phone number, daytime and after-hours contact numbers and emergency contacts.

These details will be used by the school to contact you after your course ends. It is important to make sure they are up to date and accurate.

Student Records

You can access your student record through the Paradigm student portal. Your student record holds all your personal information and academic documents, and it is confidential.

Your personal information is only accessible to relevant AFTRS staff and must not be distributed without consent. In addition, you must not distribute another’s personal information without their consent. Distribution of information without consent constitutes a breach of the Privacy Act.

To log into PARADIGM

Don’t worry if you forget the link – it will always be available from the Quick Links section on Current Students page on AFTRS website.

Your student log in details

Username = Student Number

Password = Student Number + DDMM

  • where DDMM = first four digits of your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format.
  • When you first log in, you will be asked to update your address details and emergency contact details,and also to reset your password.

Forgot your Paradigm password

Once you have set up a personal password, but then forget it, you can simply chose ‘forgot my password’ and you will need to enter your STUDENT NUMBER and your full Date of Birth. 

Paradigm will then send you a random password via email to your personal email address (not your AFTRS email).

Paying Upfront FEES on Paradigm 

Once you have received your student number, you can log into Paradigm Student Portal and pay your fees via VISA or Mastercard. 

  • Go to MAKE PAYMENT on the left hand side bar
  • You will see your enrolled units and the total fees owed. 
  • Follow the prompts to pay via credit card

A receipt will be available for you to download following payment and an invoice will be issued by Finance within a few weeks of payment.

A laptop to support the video production is required for all students.

  • Multicore 64-bit processor (e.g. Intel i5 or i7l® Intel 6thGen or newer CPU – or AMD equivalent)
  • 16GB RAM (8GB RAM minimum)
  • 512GB SSD (512GB HDD minimum)
  • 1920×1080 display (1200×800 minimum)
  • Sound card (ASIO compatible, if windows computer)

Computer hardware

  • Standard external mouse
  • Closed-back headphones
  • GPU: 4GB VRAM (2GB minimum) – (You can find the Recommended Graphics cards for Adobe Premiere here)
  • External hard drive is recommended for backup
  • Web camera

Operating system

  • Mac OS 10.15.5 or higher
  • PC users: Windows 10 64 Bit version 2004 and above

Web browser

  • The recommended web browser to access Moodle (learning management system) is  Google Chrome.
  • Moodle is currently not available for viewing on mobiles.

There are a small number of laptops that can be borrowed short-term (1-2 Days) from Service Desk if you forgot your laptop or it is broken or being fixed. 

AFTRS Student Centre does have a limited number of Laptops available on long-term loan so please contact the Student Centre on 02 9805 6444 or by emailing studentinfo@aftrs.edu.au to discuss accessible options.

You will be asked to complete a form outlining your needs and laptops will be distributed accordingly. 

Eduroam - AFTRS Wi Fi

Information Technology Wireless Service

A secure Wi-Fi service has been set up within the AFTRS Moore Park building and covers the Heritage Park area in front of the building.

Eduroam is a world-wide internet network for the Education and Research sectors allowing staff members, students and researchers seamless internet access across 12,000 institutions worldwide. This means there's no need for multiple credentials when connecting to eduroam, if you are visiting another institution just plug in your AFTRS credentials and away you go!

How to Connect

  1. Choose eduroam as your wireless network. 
  2. Enter your credentials: 
    • <studentnumber>@student.aftrs.edu.au
    • Your Student password
  3. Click "Connect" or "Join"

Eduroam Access outside AFTRS

To find an Eduroam access point world-wide, where you can log onto internet using your AFTRS credentials, use this geo locate tool, and put in your current location.
