Student Support

Supporting your mental health looks different for everyone.

For some, the best way to feel supported and well is to be connected to your community. For others, engaging in talk therapy (i.e. counselling) or other forms of therapy is useful. Some find taking prescribed medication helps. Some create supportive routines of sleep, movement and restorative activity.

I’m pleased to be able to offer AFTRS students an additional support for mental health and wellbeing – the THIS WAY UP online learning platform.

THIS WAY UP offers 6-8 week online courses that can be taken alone, or used alongside counselling and other supports. The courses are designed using iCBT (Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), which focuses on increasing awareness of your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and supporting you to create change. You’ll also learn about how particular issues affect your mental health.

Take a look through the THIS WAY UP course catalogue if you’re curious. There are courses covering specific mental health disorders:

  • Depression (in English or Chinese)
  • Worry
  • Social Anxiety
  • Health Anxiety
  • Panic Attacks
  • OCD
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Chronic Pain
  • Mixed Depression and Anxiety

And more courses covering general mental health:

  • Mindfulness-Based CBT
  • Perinatal Mental Health
  • Coping with Stress
  • Managing Insomnia
  • Intro to Mindfulness
  • Student Wellbeing

THIS WAY UP even has an online test you can take that will recommend a course for you.

How to access for free:

As a registered counsellor, I’m able to prescribe courses to AFTRS students, which waives the $59 course fee and allows you to access a course for free for 90 days. Your GP (General Practitioner or Doctor) is also able to prescribe you free access to these courses.

If you’d like to try out THIS WAY UP, get in touch with my via email, Teams, or by scheduling a counselling appointment.

THIS WAY UP is a non-profit initiative sponsored by the Australian Government and supported by a team of academic and clinical staff the Clinical Research Unit for Anxiety and Depression (CRUfAD) at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney and University of New South Wales (UNSW) Faculty of Medicine.

If you have any questions about the courses or how to access them, please get in touch with me via email or Teams.
